Abstract

This report examined the influenza sentinel surveillance system of the 2018-2019 influenza season in the Republic of
Korea. During the 2018-2019 influenza season, double peak epidemics of influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rates were
reported at week 52 (73.3/1,000 outpatients, December 23-29) and a secondary peak was reported at week 16 (44.2/1,000
outpatients, April 14-20). The ILI consultation rate was above the baseline figure (6.3/1,000 outpatients) during the entire
32 weeks of the influenza season. The consultation rate of ILI by age was highest among children ages 7-12 and lowest
among seniors ages 65 and older. Among school-aged children ages 7-18, the epidemic began and occurred more rapidly than among children of other ages. The influenza sentinel surveillance system responded to various situations by operating a flexible surveillance system, such as daily surveillance from December to April, when the number of patients increased rapidly. There are 199 influenza sentinel sites in primary clinics nationwide. However, it is impossible to work out the rate level by region, and there are limitations in predicting an age-related epidemic. Therefore, it is necessary to manage and strengthen the sentinel surveillance system continuously.
